The Cynicism of the Right: Sarah Palin and the Conservative Myth

During every national election the Republicans become the party of “Everyman” – trying to sell themselves to the regular guy- the Palin Hockey Mom and Joe Six Pack. They made folk heroes out of Joe the Plumber and touted Sarah Palin as their base. They criticize the left as the “liberal elite”- disparaging the educated and those that do not fall victim to fear and /or racism.

But behind that Republican celebration of Joe Six Pack, Joe the Plumber and the Hockey Mom- is complete disdain for the very people that they celebrate. They made Joe the Plumber into a joke. The McCain campaign railed the Obama camp for dissecting the life of Mr. Wurzelbacher, aka “Joe the Plumber” which is simply a crock. It was John McCain who invoked the image and name of Joe the Plumber ad nauseum during the last debate so was he surprised when the press decided to investigate every atom of this man’s being? Is John McCain that stupid?

The Obama campaign had nothing to do with this story- the McCain campaign promoted it and they should take responsibility for the press afterwards along, of course, with Mr. Wurzelbacher who enjoyed every second of his fifteen minutes. Of course this is a man whose head got so big he was commenting about foreign policy and the state of Israel. It was sad- and it completely was the invention of the McCain campaign.

They used this man with total abandon and really cared nothing about him or his national humiliation which culminated in the discovery that he had been on welfare but it was okay because he had paid into it. That sounds an awful lot like the socialism that Joe purportedly hated so much.

But it is the recent disintegration of the McCain campaign that should give these “real Americans” that the Republican love so much- middle America, white “Wal-Mart” moms and NASCAR dads- some pause. The Republicans showed their true colors when a McCain campaign aide called the Palins “Wasilla Hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast”. That’s how much use the Republicans have for their “base”.

Wake up people the Republican care NOTHING for the middle class or middle America or the men and women that they disparagingly refer to as “low information voters” and “lunch bucket Democrats”.

The Republican Party is the party of big business- the multinational corporation, the military industrial complex, Exxon Mobil, Halliburton. They take advantage of the average guy and dupe him into thinking that they care about him and time and time again get him to vote against his own economic interest.

They sell the absurd idea of “supply side” economics aka trickledown economics. WAKE UP – it has NEVER worked. The economy needs to be built from the bottom up- not the top down. Greed takes hold of the top. Remember the stock market crash during Reagan’s term? And now the economy is in shambles due to the economic theories of supply side and deregulation. And who do these economic theories benefit? The average American worker??? NO.

But the truth is clear. The Republicans laugh at the average American. They use the average American in every election- appealing to fear and the worst in us- to divide us and to vilify the “other” and they could care less about middle America.

Wake up MIDDLE AMERICA – these people are not your friends, they use you to get in office and then create public policy that devastates you and helps their corporate pals.

TAKE STOCK AND TAKE NOTICE.
