The Shame of the Catholic Church: Money spent on covering up rather than charity

It is a complete disgrace that the Roman Catholic Church has had to settle more than one hundred cases involving clergy sex abuse by paying out more than half a billion dollars in Los Angeles. The victims of these heinous crimes deserve more than the money that they will get and the Roman Catholic Church’s dirty little secret is out— at least for the moment.

But imagine if the church had not needed to settle. Imagine, if you will, a world where instead of paying out money because the Roman Catholic Church was complicit in the commission of child abuse, the church could have directed that money to charity. Imagine what $600 million would do for the sick, the poor and the elderly in Los Angeles? Covering up for priests is obviously a higher priority than caring for the most vulnerable in our society. I guess that makes sense since the pedophile priests seem to prey on the most vulnerable in our society.

In Boston Bernard Cardinal Law resigned because of the cover up in 2002. Roger Cardinal Mahony is getting out of trouble for his role in the cover up by paying more than $1.3 million per victim. The settlement effectively stopped the possibility of him having to take the witness stand and admitting his complicity in covering up child abuse.

Pope Benedict XVI’s record on sex abuse cases, including when he was Cardinal Josef Ratzinger -a Cardinal and the Prelate of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF, the successor to the Roman Inquisition)- is “interesting”- to say the least. Unlike on some issues, like violence in the “evil and inhuman” Islam where the pope has become a blunt lightening rod, the pope has remained subtle with regard to his changes in policies, if any, regarding clergy sexual abuse.

Benedict XVI wrote the infamous exhortation that allegations of clergy sexual abuse must be kept secret upon pain of excommunication, though in his defense, first, this was when he was the cardinal in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and this was a logical extension of Pope John Paul II’s extensive history of denial and secrecy, and second, the imposed secrecy only surrounds the Church’s internal investigation, and separate charges may be filed with the police by the victims.

The Catholic bishops of the United States overwhelmingly approved documents in November 2006 at a meeting of US Bishops exhorting Catholics to refrain from using artificial birth control, describing gay sex as immoral, and saying that anyone who disagrees with key church teachings should not take Communion. What about those celebrating the Communion?

“To be a Catholic is a challenge, and to be a Catholic requires a certain choice, and these are the choices that are consistent with the Gospel of Jesus,” the chairman of the bishops’ doctrine committee, Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli of Paterson, N.J., said during a press conference at the November 2006 meeting.

Challenging? I would say so! It must be quite a challenge to wonder if the priest consecrating the host at your sacrament molested a child that morning.

Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City, Kan., also speaking at the press conference, said: “As teachers, we have an obligation to teach, not just about the things people agree with, but the difficult things as well. . . . We have a responsibility to try and help our people understand things that, because of the culture being hostile, aren’t easily accessible to them.” Have you ever heard such bilge water polluted with hypocrisy?

What disturbs me the most is the free ride that most Roman Catholics are giving the Church hierarchy. During a television interview I heard a parishioner leaving a church in Los Angeles say that now the victims need to put this experience behind them. And the Boston Globe quoted another good Catholic- “I wish it would go away. Really, I do wish it would go away,” said Claire Hogan, 64, as she emerged from Sunday Mass at 136-year-old Saint Columbkille’s Church in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood.

The hypocrisy and the shame of the Catholic Church makes me sick to my stomach. What shakes my soul are the Catholics who consider being gay and birth control to be mortal sins and who would rather see millions die in Africa rather than provide condoms but just want this “icky priest thing” to go away. I am sure that $600 million will make a lot of it go away. Too bad we can’t say the same thing about taking care of poverty and disease.

  1. This is an important message, please read and pass it along. God has made contact. The message is about Revelation. The message is from God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost respectively. It was sent in the Spring of 2006. It is about the meaning of First is Last and Last is First . The message is
    this:
In the morning I go to Heaven. In the afternoon I live my life. In the evening I die, death.
What does this mean? In other words this means Birth is Last and Last is Birth. To understand this don’t think from point A to point B. Think of this as a continous circle of life. Birth, Life, Death, Birth. God also said that Judgment will be before Birth in Heaven. AS birth on Earth is painful so will birth in Heaven. It is possible that this message was delivered by one of Gods Angels in the Spring of 2006. Yes, God has made contact and he sent a messenger. Spread this message along, just like a chain letter. Tell two people. OH, one more thing of interest. Did you know that Mike Douglas died on his Birthday. Melanie Steffen

Jesus also said that someone made some changes in the bible. I suspect that it was someone in the Catholic Church. One example: It says that Mary had a Virgin Birth? Questionable at best. Now there is also new information that it is very possible that Jesus was taken back to Italy or Rome for the crucifixion. Remember torture was entertainment for these people. Here we have someone that says they are Lord in Heaven. Someone that they can ridicule, make fun of, then thumbs down. Good entertainment. I think this part of the bible was changed because the Romans didn’t want to be blamed for the death of Jesus, so they blamed it on the Jews. Melanie Steffen

  2. This morning I picked a bag of apples right by the road in front of the Catholic Church. I don’t think that was stealing. I was hungery. I had the thoughts of Apple Pie dancing in my head. Plus I didn’t break and enter like Goldy Locks. So I didn’t sin.

  3. All righty than! I have no idea what these comments are supposed to mean. Maybe I am missing the point or was there actually a point to be made?

  4. Hi Randy, the point that I am making is that God and Jesus have made contact recently. Last year in the spring of 2006 and then again the same time in 2007. God had a lot to say. His big issue is the meaning of First is Last. It was written in Revelation, first page, first column. Some one took it out. My guess is that they didn’t understand it, was why. Melanie 🙂

  5. Thanks for the explanation Melanie

  6. Jesus also gave me a Key. I am not sure what it unlocks, but I have a Key from Jesus. I think that is Hot!

  7. I just want to say thanks to all of you who care enough to take the time to read this and respond. Being a victim of the sexual molestation, it has never been about the money and never will be. We have to live with this every day of our lives. I am forty eight years old and there are times when I am walking down the street and can smell his cologne and that takes me right back to his room in the rectory. All I ever wanted was to have a system with and immediate response and prevention in place so that this does not happen again. If I though that I was responsible of saving one person from this nightmare then maybe I would be able to make some sense of it.

  8. Len,

I hope that you did not think that my skreed about the amount of money the Catholic Church has had to spend in a hollow attempt to make ammens for the discraceful actions of covering up pedophile priests was in any way directed at the victims. I can only imagine the hell that you and others went through and I am aware that no money can compensate for the betrayal and horror that you endured. Those of you who have raised this issue- in the courts and elsewhere have done an amazing service to the world.

  9. Correction: To the meaning of First is Last and Last is First. It means that Birth is Last and Birth is First. Sorry for the error. God talks in symbols and opposites at times so it takes time to figure out what he is saying. Some of his messages are clearer than others, plus they have multiple meanings.

  10. Well the Church paid for the settlements because that’s what the blood suckers lawyers and victims wanted. Anyway, the Catholic Church stills one of the largest charitable organization in the world, that never got acknowledge in today’s world … My question is what have you done for the world? So stop trying to be a righteous pathetic ass hole! Don’t tell me you don’t have any secret that you don’t want the world to know. Oh please……..

  11. Sorry, I meant blood sucker were lawyers not victims … that’s why the Church paid … I acknowledge the pain the victims have had. I pray for their healing … and may it begin with forgiveness … as Jesus forgave those who crucified him. And I pray for the rest of the Catholics who have suffered for something they never do … May they feel closer to Christ who suffered for something he never did.

    • Oh yes the Catholic Church has SUCH a wonderful tradition of charity- the Crusade’s, the Inquisition, selling “indulgences” in order to amass wealth and power, the subjugation of women, the intolerence of gays and lesbians, the silence of the Pope during the Holocaust. They SHOULD BE the largest charity in the world since they have been amassing wealth for nearly 2,000 years!

So you feel that praying for the victims to forgive these preists who betrayed the victims’ trust in God and the priest’s position of authority is sufficient? And by the way- the cover up that they church hierarchy constructed by moving priests from parish to parish makes this a church issue, not just the actions of a few miguided pirests.

Oh and I can tell that you must be a very devout Catholic / Christian. Calling someone an asshole- was that in the Sermon on the Mount? My goodness- you certainly have some issues don’t’ you?

  12. Peter says the catholic church is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world. Not one dime comes from the catholic church…….it comes from the collection plate money of the hard working laity. Enough free acholades for the church. If the church didn’t donate the laitys collection money then the church would lose their tax free charitable status. The nearly $2 billion paid out in sex abuse payments could sure do a lot of charity work……..Shame on the CHURCH for its coverup artists, Liars and sexual predators.

  13. Do you know how annoying this is? Did anyone happen to notice that it was NOT the entirety of the Roman Catholic Church (including myself, in case you’re wondering) who was molesting children? Instead, it WAS some disgusting people who were also Catholic clergy. I’m not excusing their behavior, or the fact that, being priests, they should be held to a high standard of moral conduct, because they SHOULD be. I am saying, though, that I am had it with morons accusing the church of the fault of the few. How about this? In Arkansas, there are seven hundred thousand people, and four thousand of whom are sex offenders, giving a .6% sex offender minority. (http://www.swivel.com/data_columns/spreadsheet/2549530?value=AK+) Seeing as this is many times higher than that of the catholic church, should we condemn Arkansas for not doing all they can to put these people behind bars, which is completely within the states grasp, and is expected of it? By the rules society has placed on The Catholic Church, the answer is a resounding yes. 6000 of them NEED to be doing hard time.

  14. […] has been said in the past that the Catholic church spends more money settling child molestation cases than it does on charity. Well, add another log to that money pit […]

  15. It is because of this cover up and the position of the catholic hierarchy that I as well as my children are no longer “Catholic”. If you can not depend on your POPE to take a stand against child abuse and immorality then who can you depend on? Have we forgotten that although the cases brought against the church were centralized to specific priests the HIERARCHY OF THE CHURCH as a whole was the one who decided to cover it up. Had the church acted appropriately we as parishoners would not be in this position. I can not be a part of the condoning of child abuse and will not raise my kids under the spiritual guidence of a church I believe to be decietful….and my church I mean all the way up to the vatican. To realize that the religion I loved and held true was so entirely corrupt was a very sad realization for me but it was a necesarry one. I am currently a god fearing woman without a church home…I am not sure where to go from here. This scandal has rocked me to the core. I am no longer Catholic because of it!

  16. You are an amazing person for being real with something that is unreal, thanks.

  17. Thanks , I’ve recently been searching for info approximately this topic for ages and yours is the
best I’ve discovered till now. However, what in regards to the conclusion? Are you sure in regards to the source?
